Chur Burger, Surry Hills, Sydney
Where did you go today:
We went to Chur Burger in Surry Hills, Sydney. The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food rated this as one of the best burgers in Sydney. This place reopened after a fire in March 2013 and claim they now have a “bigger, better, beer filled Chur Burger bar.”
What were your initial impressions:
The store was nice, freshly done up with white walls and floor giving a clean impression. It was a busy Tuesday lunch with all the tables full, the place was quite noisy with concrete floors echoing the sounds. The open kitchen was open to the restaurant and looked clean with the staff in chef whites. There are 8 tables plus bench seating and at the time we visited were all full with a crowd in their 30s and 40s. It looked good.
What did you order:
The lunch menu is pretty simple with 6 burgers – beef, chicken, vege, pulled pork, lamb and fish. There are 4 sides available including chips and 4 shakes. They also have beer, softdrink and desserts on the menu. They also have a dinner menu which looks like it adds extra options to the lunch menu. We went with the grilled beef burger with a salted caramel milkshake.
How was the burger:
Unfortunately it was really bad. The bun is a premium looking glazed brioche bun, which was heavily toasted to the extent that ours was burnt. They sit them on a tray on a shelf above the grill which has dried them out terribly. This bun sucked the moisture straight out of our mouths.
The patty is fresh and handmade and are cooked in batches of 12 on a open flame grill. Unfortunately when we were there, the pattys were cooked and sitting in the bain tray for up to 30 minutes – leaving them not being moist.
The burger has cheese and a tomato jam which tastes like a thick tomato paste. There also a big chunk of pickle honey mustard.
The burger had a lot of potential and having won awards must have something going for it. I am going to put this down to what was hopefully a bad day for them but we can only judge on what we experience on our visit.
Any additional comments:
The Salt Caramel Milkshake sounded great so we ordered one for $8. It was not good. It was lacking in ice cream and way too salty. The milk was setting on on the bench and when served was warm – not cold. The amount was small for the price but it was OK because it was so unpleasant, we didn’t finish it. They seem to have taken it off the menu since, replaced with honeycomb, but hopefully the other shakes don’t suffer from the same problems.
Not being from Sydney, we struggled to find parking nearby at lunchtime.
Give it to me in one sentence:
Nice place, shame about the food on this trip, it has lots of potential but not a good experience.
